The Internet : The Rough Guide 2000
by Angus J. Kennedy

Amazon.co.uk
The Rough Guide series, famous for its listings of skanky Italian hostels and super-cheap Istanbul eateries, covers the wildest territory of all. The Internet: The Rough Guide 2000 is a tourist's guide to the online world, complete with information on what equipment you need, what it'll cost, and what to see once you're connected. This latest edition reflects recent changes in sites' locations and contents. Hardly bigger than a coaster, this book packs a remarkable amount of information into its minimal bulk. Though its small format makes this book somewhat difficult to use (it won't lay open), author Angus Kennedy competently explains everything from basic connection procedures to multimedia and page publishing in a fraction of the space other books require (and at far less cost, too). Fans of other Rough Guide books will be pleased by this book's coverage of the Internet as it applies to travellers (Web-based mail sites, cybercafes, and the like).

The how-to information represents only half of what this guide contains. The rest is a random walk, largely through the Web's weird side. You'll find references to sites claiming to be the grossest (in the eight-year-old sense of the word) on the Web, a site where you can get a downward-ticking Death Clock, Mr Cranky's movie reviews, and "99 Ways to Open a Beer Bottle". Sure, there is some serious reference stuff, but it misses the point. Overall, the book is almost as much fun as opening 99 beer bottles in a skanky Italian hostel. --David Wall, Amazon.com

Topics covered: The Internet from every angle. What it is, what it's good for, why and how you should connect. Having connected you, the author skips off on a eclectic tour of things to see and do online.

Buy a copy for all your friends - they'll thank you. It really is as good as they say! I keep a copy next to my computer and forever find myself looking things up. I bought about 20 copies last Christmas to give out as gifts. Several people already had it, but luckily only the last edition. Enough has changed over the last year to warrant the update. And at the price, keeping up to date is hardly an issue.

Small is beautiful -content is amazing! Having found The Rough Guide to Egypt to be a brilliant and informative book - and being new to the internet - I bought 'The Rough Guide to the Internet'. It follows in the same tradition, and is both informative, clear and concise. It takes away the 'mystique' of surfing the net, and gives plenty of helpful tips, advice and knowledgeable comments. It is hard to single out one particular chapter as there is something for everyone. The ISP directory was very useful as was the World Wide Web Sites section. I would recommend this book wholeheartedly to both newcomers to the internet, and also the old hands. Don't be surprised by the small size of the book(approx 5x6 ins), it contains a huge 500 pages of information. In this case small is definately beautiful!!

An outstanding introduction to the world of the Internet. Can't really expand on the preceding reviews apart from echoing their sentiments. This book is the best introduction to the world of the Internet. I am presently delivering Internet training courses and dish these books out at the end. The delegates really appreciate it. There appears not to be a stone unturned, with regards the net, in this book. A real achievement.

THE Book for the Millennium! I reviewed the 1999 edition but I have had a copy of Rough Guides to the Internet for a couple of weeks and it is again in the MUST HAVE category. Everything is brought upto date and includes Internet Explorer 5 and Netscape. Having said that, this is not exclusively PC - it also has info. for Mac users. Apart from the vast knowledge-base actually within the book, Angus Kennedy tells us where to get further information. Written, again, with wit and clarity this book deserves 6 Crowns! And all for the price of a magazine - you can't afford to be without a copy!
