UPDATES TO CAIRO - COMMITTEE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE

CAIRO is our solution for local authorities managing their committee meetings and reports. CAIRO manages the document creation - such as Agendas and Minutes, but also web creation too. Automatically updating your web site with the latest information, such as members, meetings and documentation.

CAIRO has a few new updates:

1) Support for parish councils

Providing a record of all local parishes and publishing to the web

2) Integrated Action Items

While typing your minutes you can instantly create an action item and reminders for actions assigned. These go directly onto the CAIRO to-do list.

3) Record Members Interests

You can now record a members declaration of interest directly into the database as you type the minutes.

4) Information Booklet

You can now create a complete council information booklet, detailing all members, meetings, committees and parishes in one unit. Huge savings in time and effort.

5) Support for non-published committees

Particularly useful for internal committees whose meetings and so on should not be published on the web site.

WHAT ZAPPED FAXYOURMP.COM?

FaxYourMP.com is a brilliant service. From there you can type a message for your MP, it will find their fax number for you and send it too - all for no charge! If you don’t know your MP, just keyin your postcode and it will tell you.

I've used it a few times to make my opinions known on different topics - whereas I must admit I never got round to writing to my MP before.

Anyway, the poor old service got swamped a couple of weeks ago because the RSPCA sent out a mail asking members to use the service to voice opinions on the Anti-Hunting Bill. They also asked members to forward the email onto their friends - so they could have a go too.

The consequence was of course that thousands of lobbyists used the system and the thing got a bit overloaded.

Not only that, but it transpires that most faxers just cut-n-pasted the text straight from the RSPCA message, so most MP's saw it as a bit of a spam shot and probably just dumped most of the faxes.

Nevertheless, this is an excellent service and I warmly recommend it to you.

UNDELETING FILES THAT AREN'T IN THE RECYCLE BIN
A great free utility

If you delete a file you can usually recover it from the Recycle Bin. But, if an application deletes a file then it does not usually appear in the Recycle Bin (certain file managers aside).

Well those lovely chaps at SysInternals have a got a free utility called Fundelete. You can download it from

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/fundelete.shtml

It's not strictly an undeleter - instead it adds Recycle Bin functionality to other programs automatically, including the command line and other programs. Suitable for W2K and NT4 - this is worth a look.

AVOID MASTER DOCUMENTS
They still don't work!

Master documents - such a good idea, keeping many separate chapters in a whole book say - yet they simply don't work. Even with Office 2002 we're still getting reports of master documents being corrupted. And if you need a master document that's a lot of information you've got tied up in there.

Our advice, steer clear of master documents, use folders or similar to keep it all organised instead.

QUICKLY ADJUSTING EXCEL COLUMN WIDTHS

You can adjust several chosen columns at once by holding down the Ctrl key as you click on the column headers. Then you adjust one column header, by dragging the right hand edge of it to the width you want.

This works for rows too.

See http://www.c2000.com/mswindow for more information

SORTING AND ORGANISING IN OUTLOOK

You can sort any column in Outlook just by clicking on the header. I like to show mine in the order in which they were sent for example.

You can also sort multiple columns, click the first column, then hold down the shift key and click the extra columns, so for example you could do "From" and then "Received" to see them sorted by sender, then date.

You can also click the Organise button to quickly assign colours to particular senders - which makes it easy to see who sent you what.

TURN OFF "SCRIPT DEBUGGING" ERROR MESSAGE

I don’t know about you, but I get a lot of those errors that say "there is an error on the page - do you want to debug?"

Well no, I don’t want to debug someone elses web page (and indeed it normally wouldn't do any good even if I did). So how do you turn the darn message off?

1) Start Internet Explorer
2) Select Tools, Internet Options
3) Select Advanced
4) Near the top of the list find:
5) "Disable script debugging" - this should be ON
6) "Display a notification about every script error" - this should be OFF
7) Click OK

SIGNATURES - MAKING THE MOST OF EMAIL

We all use signatures - that's the little message that appears at the bottom of your email.

Now, you could use your signature to express a thousand and one disclaimers - which I suspect are completely useless in a court of law - or, you could use your signature to advertise your business.

If your signature reads:

Simon Walden
Centreline 2000
sample@c2000.com
http://www.c2000.com

Well, you've given them the contact information, but why would they contact you?

Here's are some simple rules to make your signature an advert:

1) Attract your readers attention
2) Create an Interest
3) Finally, give them a Desire to Act

Here's an alternative sig file:
