CORRECTIONS IN WORDS PRINT PREVIEW

I often use Print Preview mode for a final read through and particular tuning of page breaks and the like. But did you know you can actually make corrections while in Print Preview mode?

Click on the Magnifier icon on the toolbar and your cursor changes to the text editing cursor (sort of I shaped). Click where you want to edit.

See http://www.c2000.com/mswindow for more information

CHANGING THE INSTALLATION DRIVE

Our office machines regularly change configuration, hard disks or disk partitions come and go. Which can mean our CD drive letter moves around as well, now that can be corrected using the Disk Manager, sometimes - but for some configurations that's not an option for us, so good old regedit comes to the rescue:

Find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion which you will see has a number of useful goodies. There you will see "SourcePath", this is the one you want to change.

Incidentally, you can also change registered company and user names there as well:
"RegisteredOrganization" and "RegisteredOwner" respectively.

ADDITION TO EARLIER NEWSLETTER

In an earlier newsletter we published this item below:

NO LICENCE AVAILABLE BUG
This is a cracker!

I was recently installing Office 2000 onto an XP machine, all
seemed to be fine, but when Access wa started it would complain
that "there was no client licence" and promptly shut down again.

First thought was I must have used the wrong CD or something,
double checked everything re-ran the installation - same problem.

It turns out that if you already have the font "hatten.ttf" (yes,
that's right, the font!) installed the access gives you this
message! Solution: rename the font, install access with a forced
re-install and rename the font back again).

What boggles me about this is what possible connection can there
be between having a font installed and Access licence mechanism -
really what are those microsoft guys smoking???

Well, Bill Hamm wrote to us to add that this problem also applied to Excel.

Thanks Bill.

WORD MAIL MERGE WITH OUTLOOK CONTACTS

Word offers what out to be a nifty feature, doing a mail merge from contacts in your Outlook address book. However, for some obscure reason, the field names you see in Word are not the same as those in Outlook (Why? Beats me!)

Anyway, here is the definitive list of how the field names relate:

Word Merge Field Name Outlook Contact Field Name
--------------------- --------------------------
Courtesy_Title Title
First_Name First Name

There's also a bunch of fields you can't get at all, not all are useful, but here's a short of list of some you'd think you could use but can't

Anniversary
Business Address !!!!
Full Name
Gender
Home Address !!
Initials
Middle Name
Nickname
Any of the user fields

SCREEN FROZEN - HOW CAN IT BE CLEARED?

Problem:

The users screen is locked, not matter what keys are pressed the
screen cannot be used until turned off/on.

Solution:

99 times out of 100 user has pressed CTRL-S, the handshaking command
for pause. Press CTRL-Q and this will "unfreeze" the screen.

If you have spent any time at all with Unix, you probably know this,
but I bet your users don't!

MOST USEFUL WORD SHORTCUTS (PART II)

Styles

1) To remove any manual formatting, press Ctrl-Spacebar to remove it on characters, or Ctrl-Q to remove it from the paragraph. These return the format to the style currently in use. To return it to the Normal style use Ctrl-Shift-N.

This can be applied to whole document, which can bring external files into your house style very quickly.

2) To create headings, hold down Alt and Shift, then press the left or right arrow to create headings, and move from heading to subheading etc.

Or, you can press Ctrl-Alt-1, -2, -3 for Heading 1, 2 or 3. Ctrl-Alt-4 gives you the Euro symbol (in Europe - apparently Americans don't deal with Europeans).

Incidentally, Alt-Shift-Arrow also works on your numbered and bulleted lists too.

3) You can use Alt-Shift-Up and -Down arrow to move paragraphs (or table rows) up and down. I use this a lot in tables.
