UNIPLEX V9.10 PREVIEW

We can expect the Uniplex V9.10 launch any week now so here are some titbits about the forthcoming release.

Uniplex are following their policy of steady but sure, with few changes ensuring the product remains stable. This is a policy we at Centreline agree with. We feel at this stage of the product life the last thing anyone needs is major re- working and the possibility of new bugs.

Probably the key changes are in interoperability with the other systems, especially mail.

The Uniplex/Unix mail combination has always been very powerful and in some respects the rest of the world is only just catching up. However, in terms of the PC Uniplex has never quite been there. Until now, with the addition of IMAP mail connectivity and new document convertors.

IMAP allows any standard PC mail client, such as Outlook, Netscape, Eudora and so on, to integrate directly with the Uniplex mail server - just as they do when connecting to an Internet provider, but internally. This instantly brings the PC and Unix mail systems together again.

Combine this with more up to date document convertors to allow Uniplex and non-Uniplex users to freely interchange documents and you have a mail hub that makes sense.

In addition there are some new features driven by the Internet, the most up-front and useful being the inclusion of automatic signature blocks.

Finally the licensing deal with Informix has been concluded which will see Informix SE7 as an integral part of the Uniplex suite. The datalink module is also brought up to date for all Oracle and Ingres database systems.

The long announced terminal in a web browser will also be available. This supports the integration of the PC and Unix environments. Any web browser (such as Netscape or Explorer) can support the JAVA based terminal emulator to access Uniplex from a Windows PC.

The system is not finalised yet and Uniplex carefully point out that nothing is done until its done. However, this target seems realistic and represents a good set of upgrades to the system. We'll let you know more when we get our hands on it.

ZAPPING FIND FAST AND BOOSTING WINDOWS PERFORMANCE

Find Fast, the odds you don't know what it is, except you've seen it once or twice as your machine has fallen over.

What is supposed to happen is that Find Fast indexes your documents while you are not using your PC, then when you search documents for a given word Find Fast returns your list in double quick time.

What actually happens is that Find Fast just sits there chewing up disk space and processing cycles and generally freezing your machine just when you don't want it to. And if you are really unlucky, it never un-freezes, instead just General Protection Faults and falls over.

And lets face it you don't go searching that often do you.

So, here is how to clear out Find Fast

1) Select the Windows Control Panel

2) Select the Find Fast icon

3) The dialog box will show which drives Find Fast should be indexing.

4) Click each drive in turn, then select Index, Delete Index from the menu. Find Fast asks you to confirm and then zaps the index and never indexes that disk again.

5) Repeat this for all drives and find fast is done.

6) When you've completed that, just click on OK to close the Find Fast dialog.

Two minutes work to recover some disk space and performance, that's not bad is it?

FIXING BLADE PRO LOCATIONS

A common problem for Blade Pro users is that you want to keep your Blade Pro presets in different directories to the default. But if you do this, you have to reselect the details each time.

You can use the Registry Editor to correct this.

1) Fire up Regedit

2) Search for "blade"

3) You will find three entries for folders, these change depending upon the last preset used. As long as you rename all three you can select a new location.

4) You then to go to C:\Windows\Temp and delete "Cached Blade Pro Settings" if it is present.

DON'T TOUCH THAT MOUSE

An occasional series of keyboard shortcuts.

In MS-ACCESS there are quick keys for entering dates and times:

Enter current date Ctrl + ; (semi-colon)

Enter current time Ctrl + : (colon)

SEEN ON THE INTERNET

This live quote from someone reminiscing about England.

"Also, there are the little things, the "Whack Roger Moore With A Haddock" weekend in Surrey sticking foremost in my mind although "Rub up against Emma Peel for a guinea" was quite popular as well (especially with Dame Diana who has promised to buff up for the June semi-final between her and Ms.Thurman)."

They've changed, Truly. I wrote to Microsoft in 1982 regarding
what appeared to be a bug in their firmware for the Tandy Radio
Shack Model 100 laptop computer -- a nifty machine which I still
use. The problem was that any printer attached merely overprinted
the preceding line -- the WP firmware didn't include an end of line
carriage return -- a bad case of new stuff on top.

The reply was prompt -- a handwritten note from a Mr Bill Gates
in which he apologized for the error and provided clear
instructions on opening the file, correcting one line, and
closing the file. His solution worked a treat. Some time later
I saw that Microsoft had floated and were seeking investors.
I resisted the temptation because I couldn't see any future for
a company that released word-processing software without testing
it on a printer.

I've now read that Microsoft and Mr Gates have parted company.
A pity -- he was one of their more personable employees, and he
had legible handwriting.
