PALLADIO PROVIDES "LOVE" PROTECTION

PALLADIO, our mail bridge and security product can be used to
provide protection against "LoveBug" style viruses. This means
you get simple, single point of administration protection for all
your network.

PALLADIO sits between the internet and your email system,
checking and filtering all messages coming into your site. You
can check for size, address and message type (as in LoveBug).

PALLADIO provides protection for Unix systems acting as mail hubs
for PC's as well.

Incidentally, there are now a number of variants on the LoveBug
virus out in the field - and with such a simple technique for
delivery - and one which has been explained so clearly by the
various anti-virus pundits - there are bound to be more.

PALLADIO breaks down incoming messages and inspects both the body
and any attachments for the message. To configure PALLADIO to
protect against the LoveBug style attack you need to add a single
configuration line:

	FILETRAP=/vbs

If you already have entries in FILETRAP, then separate with
commas:

	FILETRAP=/avi,/mpeg,/mp3,/vbs

Using the FILETRAP method, any attachment of that type can be
deleted automatically or sent to quarantine to be checked.

THIS WEEKS HOT DOWNLOAD - PERSONAL ANTI-VIRUS

F-Prot anti-virus software is a "free for private use" package.
Runs as a DOS command and is a very light weight anti-virus system.
Don't be put off by its shareware background, the authors were one of
the first companies to have a "LoveBug" patch available. This is
a commercial product if corporates want to pursue if further.

WINDOWS 2000: CHANGING YOUR COMPANY NAME

Yep, you've finished the installation, the system is all running fine and dandy, and the boss says "You know we should have a full stop after Ltd."

Changing the registered company name under W2K isn't too difficult.

1) Start REGEDIT
2) Select, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SOFTWARE, MICROSOFT, WINDOWS
3) Find either REGISTERED OWNER, or REGISTERED ORGANIZATION
4) Edit as required and save details.

MS-EXCHANGE: STOP THE SPAM - Filtering messages by domain.

If you are not using a mail protection system then you might want
to try this alternative method for preventing certain domains
mailing into your system.

This can be used to provide SPAM protection, though the mechanism
is a little clunky.

1) Start Exchange Administrator
2) Select server, connections
3) Select Internet Mail Service connector
4) Select the Connections Tab
5) Select the Message Filtering button.
6) On this dialog you can block individual users (i.e.
spammer@spam.com) or whole domains (spam.com)

MICROSOFT ACCESS: Formatting Yes/No fields

Did you know you can make a yes/no field display as a Yes/No -
or On/Off or Male/Female - by using the Format property for
a field. Just set the format to

	;"Yes";"No"
	;"Male";"Female"

NOTE: That leading semi-colon is required.

MICROSOFT WORD: WHITE TEXT ON BLACK BACKGROUNDS

Creating a "reverse" (the printers technical term for white on
black print) is simple in Word.

1) Highlight your text
2) Select Format, Borders and Shading, Shading
3) Set the Shading COlour to Black.

In later versions of Word, where the text colour is set to
"Auto", the Word will automatically print the text in white.

In earlier versions, you need to
4) Select Format, Font
5) Set Font Colour to White.

By the way, this often looks best if you put the reversed text
into a table cell, so that you can control the black spacing around the
text.

MICROSOFT OUTLOOK: USING FOLDERS TO SHARE NEWSLETTERS

There are several ways to share a newsletter like this, you could
re-mail it to everyone in the organisation who should read it.
Or, you could do it the easy way and use Public Folders.

Step 1: Create a public folder. Generally you would want to give
everybody access to read the folder (Reviewer status) and if you
want people to be able to post to the folder use Author status.

Step 2: Make sure that the "Anonymous" account has permission to
create items in the folder - without it you cannot accept e-
mailed newsletters.

Step 3: Every folder has an e-mail assigned to it. The easiest
place to find the name is open Exchange Administrator,
Organisation, Folders. It is usually something like "new-public-
folder@yourcompany.com"

Step 4: Subscribe that email address to the newsletter. For
example to subscribe the C2000 newsletter, go to
http://www.c2000.com/papers and enter the folders email address
as the subscription email address.

Step 5: Er, that's it.

UNIPLEX DIARY - MISSING HOLIDAYS

If you've been through May and been surprised when the bank
holidays came up, maybe you need to check that you are up to date
on bank holidays in the Uniplex diary.

You can use the Word Processor to edit the file

	UAP/diary/diary.holiday

You can add repeated dates or single dates for this year and the
years to come.

SCO UNIX: WHEN CAN YOU USE HALTSYS AND DOES IT SYNC?

Haltsys is the quick (not the safest) way of closing a SCO box
down.  If you watch many old Unix hands you will see them type;

	sync; sync; haltsys

The "sync" is supposed to flush everything out to disk and
haltsys closes the system.

So, firstly it shows that old hackers don't really trust sync,
since they do it twice, but also, haltsys does do a sync as well.

Can you trust it? Actually, no. Or at least not if you have been
using any applications. Running shutdown is preferred since
applications will close down properly and flush data out as
required - rather than being stopped summarily.

MACROMEDIA FLASH: IMPROVING PERFORMANCE WITH FONTS

Since Flash 3.0 every font you use in the movie is embedded into
the movie. While this gives you great typographic control it is
easy to boost the size of a movie enormously without realising
it.

If you want to keep a small (and fast) movie, then restrict the
number of fonts you use.

HTML: BREAKING OUT OF OTHER PEOPLES FRAMES

One of the shortest yet very effective tips I know:

Add in the section and anybody
selecting a link in your site will break out of another sites
frames. Yet, it makes no difference while working in your own
site.

DON'T TOUCH THAT MOUSE!
An occasional series of keyboard shortcuts

To restore or expand a window without trying to hit that little
button in the upper right corner, you can do two things. One is
to Hit Alt then Space then N. Or double click on the title bar of
the window you want to expand.

Negotiating with a cat is dead simple. *I* give *him* food, and *he*,
well, um, *he* lets me.

   Wait a minute...
