Centreline in Action
WebManage - Internet Services from Centreline 2000

WebManage from Centreline 2000, is the complete Internet and Web Management service. We run your Web Site, you're free to run your business!

Having a presence on the Internet/Web is easy, right?

Well it may be. But running a successful web site - managing it and keeping it going - can be complex and costly.

There's no argument. Every local authority and commercial organisation should be on the net. But a number of myths surround the net and the unwary manager could be in for an expensive voyage into the unknown...

Myth: Running a web server doesn't require any extra resource

Fact: Running a web server is a full time job. Do you have the necessary skills in-house. Is the manpower available - will it be available next month and the month after, and the month after that?

Myth: Running a web server is inexpensive

Fact: A recent survey by IDC of companies who built their own web servers, suggests that actual costs were on average 4 times the budgeted figures! Overall budgets were in the ten's and hundred's of thousands of pounds per annum. It will cost over £20,000 just to provide the hardware and a permanent high-speed link to the Internet.

Myth: Running a web server is simple

Fact: Have you thought about the security implications of having members of the public access a machine on your network? What about the price of success... would your web server stand the strain if it had to take 2, 4 or 10,000 hits per week?

Myth: Once running, people will come flocking

Fact: No they won't. Your site must be publicised through conventional press and marketing. It needs to be registered at all key Web search sites and main directories.

Myth: All you need is some pictures and a little bit of graphics design

Facts: You'll need to 'port' large amounts of documentation - converting from the original electronic format into HTML. You'll need to build and index all the pages. You'll need control and archiving software too. Do you need to do all that in multiple languages? Will the existing document structures suffice - will large portions need re-writing? Can you develop the specialist tools you will need?

Fortunately, there is an easier way.

Reaching out to the community...and the world!

Despite the potential pitfalls, more and more local authorities are using the net. It is the ideal way to promote business, conference and leisure facilities - a general forum for presenting your area to its best advantage. Its good for your image and your business. But there is more to it than that. Increasingly local authorities are finding they can enjoy 3 very concrete benefits:

  • 1) They can reach out to the community, making huge volumes of public domain information accessible to the public (meeting minutes, planning applications and a range of legislative documents). And this is an interactive medium.
  • 2) Councillors can dial-in from home to pick up the latest meeting minutes. Members of the public can contact and correspond with those who serve them.
  • 3) They can also reach out to the world! More and more authorities are using the Internet and the Web as a mechanism for building alliances nationally, in Europe, and across the world. Sharing information, applying for grants or European funding. Whatever the motive - the beauty of the net is that it cuts across absolutely every geographical boundary!

More Netscape Tricks

Following on from last month's Netscape Tricks we have a couple more real time savers.

Cut those addresses

Did you know you don't have to type in the "http" gobbledegook each time? If you have a URL "http://www.c2000.com" you can short cut this to just "www.c2000.com" and Netscape will add the rest.

In fact, you can go shorter still, if you are trying to each a ".com" name, you can just type in "c2000".

What the heck is Unmozify?

Unmozify is a brilliant shareware program for browsing your Netscape collected pages off-line.

Unmozify goes through your Netscape cache files (called .moz) and re-produces all the pages, ready-linked on your hard disk.

We couldn't live without it now, we just zap through the web picking out the pages we are interested in, unmozify them later and read them at out leisure.

If like us you are often searching for background papers, product data sheets and so on, then you don't want to read great long chunks of text while on-line. Instead you just blast through the pages you want - skipping to the next as soon as its done. When you are all finished, just unmozify the pages to read, print or save to file.

There's no relation between Centreline 2000 and the makers of Unmozify but you can find them from our Hot Links page.

Uniplex Time Bomb

If you have upgraded to Uniplex V8.00 or V8.10 then you may be sitting on a time-bomb just waiting to bring your system to its knees!

But have no fear - help is here!

The problem:

Go and check your /tmp directory - if you have a sub-directory called ongo, then you've got the problem. That little directory is slowing filling up with empty socket files! Sooner or later your system goes crash as the /tmp file partition (or worse the root partition) runs out of inodes.

The cause:

A little buggette causes Uniplex to create these files, they are related to the mail clients for the onGO system. They should be created and cleared, or not created at all.

Hey You, Reg!

There is a little program called "ureg" in UAP/bin which causes the trouble - but leave this file alone. Instead you can create a pre-emptive script file which stops the problem.

Just 2 lines

Create the file UAP/cmds/ureg and enter the following 2 lines:

	#!/bin/sh
	exit 0

Save the file, run chmod 777 UAP/cmds/ureg. That's all it takes and the problem is over. (Use /usr/UAP or wherever your main UAP folder is held). "Too many arguments" when deleting ongo?

You may have hundreds of files within the /tmp/ongo folder, so many that rm * doesn't work - instead run:

	find /tmp/ongo -exec rm -f {};

and wait patiently.

Thanks for reading April's newsletter, see you next month.
