C2G provides a small handful of simple, but vital graphic tools that you can run from the DOS command line. They are ideal for batch processing collections of graphic files prior to posting on the web.

C2G is based on the excellent "netpbm" utilities, and anyone with an interest in exploring this area are strongly advised to seek them out.

Summary of commands:

All commands are run in this standard format:

	c2g command [flags] files

PAINT SHOP PRO TIPS

When browsing files using the PSP browser you may get the message "Cannot open Photo CD" when seemingly there is no Photo CD anywhere near your system.

Believe it or not, the problem is caused by PSP's own browse files, (those pspbrowse.jbf files you see)!

To resolve the problem:

Go to File--> Preferences--> General Preferences-->Plug in filters-->

And the uncheck the selection for "Enable automatic plug in file format identification"

CONFIGURING NT PRINTERS FOR UNIX SYSTEMS

To use NT as a print server for your Unix boxes isn't actually that hard once you know how. Before you start make sure you have TCP/IP and TCP/IP Printing services installed.

The first step is to make sure the NT spooler is set to handle incoming data in RAW mode. That is to say that all printer data sent from Unix is passed straight through to the printer on the basis that the Unix machine has done all the formatting work already.

1) Start up regedit.exe

2) Find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LPDSVC \Parameters

3) Add a new key of type DWORD with the name SimulatePassThrough

4) Set the value to 1

5) Close up editor

Now close down the server and restart.

Now over to the Unix end, the basic setup of remote printing varies from Unix to Unix, but for example on SCO you must install the remote printer code by running "mkdev rlp". On System V use "/usr/sbin/lpsystem -t bsd -R 1 -T 1 <NTsys>"

Next you need to configure specific printers. For SCO you would add a remote printer using scoadmin, selecting the printers options.

For System V use this sequence:
"lpadmin -p local_name -s NT_sname!NT_printer"
"enable local_name"
"accept local_name"

Where "local_name" will be the name of the printer on the Unix box, "NT_sname" is the NT server name and "NT_printer" is the printer name on the NT machine.

From here on in, any prints using lpr -p local_name will be automatically routed over to the NT machine.

WARNINGS ABOUT WORD

You may well have heard about the several (now 6 I believe) critical calculation bugs in Microsoft Excel, well it turns out Word has had its own calc bug since it was first launched - and its not that obscure either.

Basically, if you have a column of numbers with more than 87 entries then Word no longer calculates correctly.

A typical example might be the sum of a column of numbers in a budget say.

Incidentally, if it is a budget, you've got another problem, it consistently calculates *low*, so you haven't asked for all the money you should have done!

This bug was just confirmed by Microsoft but exists in all the products back to Word 2.0!

DON'T TOUCH THAT MOUSE
Another of our irregular keyboard short cuts

Back in your Pitman typing class you were probably taught to put the date at the top and right of your letter.

How would you like to be able to do that with just two shortcuts?

Ctrl-R Right aligns the current line
Alt-Shift-D	Inserts todays date

Just like that!

Don't forget, not only can you download a two-page ready reference to all the Word shortcuts on the web site at http://www.c2000.com/tips/ but also you can have your own pre-printed stiff card versions for any sensible donation to charity - just email us at post@c2000.com for more on this.

THAT CLINTON STORY
What, you mean there is an IT connection?

Apologies to US readers who probably know all about this.

The Starr Report on Clinton was written using WordPerfect, which apparently keeps deleted footnotes hidden with the document. Now WordPerfect knows not to display them, but the HTML conversion tool used at the White House kindly put them all back in!

Consequently you can now see footnotes such as this one from Monica Lewinsky talking about a meeting between President Clinton and TV Journo' Eleanor Mondale. The "deleted" footnote quotes her as saying, "Maybe she's not sleeping with him yet. Anyway, there's the excitement. It's the president."

There are also sections missing as well as added in this conversion. And, Word users are not safe either as MS-Word does much the same thing when running in Fast Save mode.

So, be warned - time to go check your web site now?

HALLOWEEN IMAGE COMPETITION

Just for a bit of fun we are hosting a free for all, no prizes, just for fun digital painting competition on the theme of Halloween.

Fancy a quick gander then point your browser to http://www.c2000.com/halloween
