Summary of New Features

One of the more exciting features in Version 9.0 is a new Web based terminal emulator. The emulator runs within a standard Web browser (such as MS Explorer or Netscape Navigator) and offers full access to Uniplex on a Unix server over a LAN or the Internet.

This feature simplifies the integration of PC's with Uniplex. It will also significantly reduce the costs of purchasing emulation software.

The emulator supports all of the functionality one would expect of a top level emulator, together with colour support and mouse controls. The emulator supports all of the "standard" terminal types but also high resolution graphics such as the Tektronics 4010 terminal that will enable better facilities such as the UBS business graphics module that is a part of the UBS v.9.0 suite.

To simplify Internet mail connection Uniplex Mail under version 9.0 is MIME enabled. This stands for Multi-purpose Internet Message Extensions (RFC1521)) and is a standard in use worldwide to maintain compatibility across the diverse mailing systems encountered on the Internet. Mail Benefits you gained in V8.10

  • Improved text support
  • Superior mail reporting and administration
  • Automatic encoding of non-text mail attachments
  • Retrieval of mis-sent messages (still unique to Uniplex)

Mail Benefits gained with V9.0

  • Full MIME support to identify messages and attachments
  • With Document Access module allows full viewing, saving and editing of nearly any attached file
  • Command line interface to mail
  • Use of trashcan mailbox

Informix 7 Standard Engine

This is more significant than the 8.10 Informix upgrade as it has the following benefits :-

  • It is a faster more efficient database engine
  • It supports new datatypes that will provide better data handling,
    • Byte, to handle binary data
    • Text, to handle textual data of any size or type and include composed characters
    • DateTime, to hold Calendar date and time details
    • Interval, to store a span of time
  • The Uniplex Forms package adds support for the new data types
  • Uniplex Forms now allows calculations within form fields, i.e. additions and dependencies
  • Informix 7 SE is fully Year 2000 compliant and its inclusion together with the other date work carried out by Uniplex will make UBS v.9.0 completely Year 2000 proof.
  • In addition to this, Uniplex customers will be regarded, by Informix, as Informix users for upgrade purposes. In the past a user of Uniplex approaching Informix to purchase a later version would be looked upon as a new Informix user and charged full price. However a UBS v.9.0 user will be able to get an "upgrade price" from Informix if they want to upgrade their database.

Document Access Module

As well as supporting over 50 different document formats, the optional Document Access module adds current versions of formats, in particular:

  • MS Word 7.0
  • MS Excel
  • Frame Maker 5.0
  • WordPerfect 7.0
  • QuattroPro 7.0

Word Processing

You can now use the ".PM" command (with no arguments) to prevent paragraphs being split over pages.

The dictionaries and thesaurus have been updated to correct a number of incorrect entries, not least of which was "millennium". In addition you can now add additional dictionaries, for example of legal or medical terms.

Spreadsheet

As well as confirmed Year 2000 compliance, the spreadsheet now has an autosave function just to add that extra security.
